Athens International Airport
Portrait
Athens International Airport was the world's first privately financed airport project concluded on the basis
of a BOOT (Build Own Operate Transfer) contract. Located in Spata, it went into operation in 2001 and since
then has received numerous awards as one of the best airports in Europe in respect of customer satisfaction
and airline marketing. For example, in October 2011, it won the Routes Airport Marketing Award for the seventh
time in succession for good cooperation with the airlines. Airline marketing is one key reason why more and more airlines
are including Athens on their flight schedules. Athens stood out as highly cost competitive due to high efficiency
and low input prices.
Shareholders
Athens International Airport is 55 percent owned by the Greek state. As private shareholders,
HTA holds 26.7 percent, HTAC 13.3 percent, while private investors hold just
under five percent.
